The Hard Part for Us Is Being Humble: Learning to Walk in God’s Grace

Humility is one of the greatest virtues we are called to live out, yet it’s also one of the hardest for us to practice. Pride comes naturally; humility takes surrender. The hard part for us is being humble—but it’s also the most rewarding step in our walk with God.

Why Is Humility So Difficult?

In a culture that celebrates achievement, recognition, and self-promotion, humility often feels like weakness. We’re taught to “stand tall,” “be proud,” and “make a name for ourselves.” Yet God’s Word reminds us that His Kingdom operates differently.

James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” This means that pride sets us against God, but humility positions us to receive His blessings and favor.

What Does It Mean to Be Humble?

Being humble doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself—it means thinking of yourself less. True humility is:

  • Acknowledging God’s authority in every area of life.
  • Serving others instead of always seeking the spotlight.
  • Letting go of pride to embrace God’s will over our own.

It’s choosing to reflect Christ, who humbled Himself even to the point of the cross (Philippians 2:8).

The Blessings of Humility

Even though being humble is hard, the rewards are eternal. When we walk in humility, we:

  • Grow closer to God and experience His grace.
  • Build stronger relationships with others.
  • Develop wisdom that comes from listening, not just speaking.
  • Find peace in letting go of the need to always be right or first.

How to Practice Humility Daily

Here are a few simple steps to start walking humbly before God:

  1. Pray for a humble heart—Ask God to reveal areas of pride.
  2. Serve others quietly—Do good without needing recognition.
  3. Listen before speaking—Value the perspective of others.
  4. Give God the glory—Acknowledge Him in every success.

Yes, the hard part for us is being humble. But humility is the very thing that opens the door to God’s grace. When we bow low before Him, He lifts us higher than pride ever could.

Prayer

“Lord, teach me humility. Help me let go of pride and walk in the grace You freely give. Amen.”
